Materials needed
You do not need EXACTLY the same as I have but as close as you can get.
I was using;
A canvas 20x25cm panel. The outline print out is designed for A4 so as close to that size as possible, no smaller at any rate. I am using a grey gesso panel from Jackson’s Art.
Oil Paint:
Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow and Titanium or Zinc white. If you don't have those exact colours essentially you need a deep blue, a white, a bright red and a bright yellow. The Daler Rowney Georgian introductory set is excellent and is linked below.
Priming: (If you are starting with a WHITE canvas) A neutral colour such as paynes grey or blue to prime the canvas with. You could mix up your own priming colour with blue and white, just don't go too dark. Leftover emulsion paint sample pots make excellent canvas primers! Please see my priming tutorial for guidance
A glaze medium or quick drying varnish. A little medium helps oil paint flow, and is useful for the first stage of priming as it speeds up drying time.
A palette knife - the best for mixing look a little like a flat trowel with an angled handle.
Brushes - Ideally about half a dozen, of varying sizes, inlcuding one big one for the background, and one small one for details.
Turps - this is for thinning the paint and cleaning your brushes.
Cleaning rags or kitchen roll: Lots of it! For wiping your brushes.
A palette: The bigger the better. Any disposable surface will do, such as a paper plate. If you are buying a palette, buy as big a palette as possible. If you are using paper plates, mix different segments on different plates. One for flowers, one for the jug, one for background etc.
An apron or old shirt. You will get paint on yourself.
An easel: Table top or freestanding. Or if you are working on a rigid panel prop it up at an angle, it is much easier to judge shapes if your canvas is vertical rather than lying flat.
Print out the reference photo and outline drawing for transfer on A4.
