Anyone can paint!

I work under my maiden name, Catherine Ingleby, and have painted professionally for nearly three decades! I love painting a variety of subjects, ranging from simple still lifes and landscapes to portraits of people and pets. My work is characterized by a strong use of light and color, along with bold brushwork, almost exclusively in oils. It can be found in many notable private collections, including that of HM Queen Elizabeth and several prominent racing stables.

I am passionate about teaching art, having had a varied art education myself: a year at a contemporary art school in Paris, studying Aesthetics and Classical Art at Durham University, and finally enrolling in traditional atelier training in Florence. In the past decade, I have developed a strong academic interest in color theory, the study of which has greatly improved both my own practice and teaching.

I derive immense satisfaction from aiding artists of all skill levels in improving or rediscovering their creativity, enabling them to surpass their abilities. Over the years, I've conducted numerous courses, workshops, and provided private tuition, lectures, and practical demonstrations.

Colour charts are a very therapeutic and useful exercise in increasing your knowledge of your own particular paints and tools. In creating one of these charts, you’ll become very familiar with the strength of the pigments and the depth of the values. The charts are invaluable if you are apprehensive of mixing colours or if you are struggling to match correct values.

Catherine's knowledge of the medium is invaluable particularly helping me to understand colour theory and the mixing of the colours. It is so important! Alongside this, she provides expert guidance on composition, materials to use including paints, brushes to use, how to prime a board/canvas and much, much more. I can't recommend her enough.

Workshop

Catherine came to deliver a day workshop for the teachers at our senior school. It was a wonderful day, Catherine is warm and easy to get along with. Her instructions were very clear and she was patient with our many, many questions. All of us made real progress on the day and it has helped our own art teaching significantly. In particular we learnt about the more detailed parts of oil painting which has made our processes at school so much better and Catherine so very generous sharing her years of experience and advice about what equipment to invest in. I would highly recommend her courses to both beginners and more experienced artists.
